Custom As Machined Services

Our as-machined service is not limited to a single process; whether your project involves traditional milling, heavy-duty turning, specialized cutting, or high-precision grinding, we deliver this specialized service in its pure, raw state. By choosing our as-machined service, you eliminate secondary surface treatments and prevent any chemical or thermal distortion, ensuring the part respects your tightest tolerances. Our machinists strictly monitor tool wear across all operations to guarantee that our as-machined production maintains consistent tool paths, uniform textures, and zero burrs. Every metal or plastic component undergoes in-house deep cleaning and arrives ready for immediate functional testing or assembly—giving you a cost-effective contract manufacturing solution with significantly reduced lead times.

What Is an As-Machined Finish?

At its core, an as-machined surface finish is exactly what you get fresh from the shop floor. Because it skips all post-processing, the resulting texture, roughness, and tool markings are directly determined by the machine tool, cutting parameters, and the operator’s expertise. As a as-machined contract manufacturer, we ensure that “raw” never means “careless.” Through strict tool-wear monitoring and optimized cutting paths across all our machining disciplines, our as-machined production delivers a clean, predictable, and highly consistent texture. It is the most reliable and cost-effective manufacturing option for engineering teams who require rapid-turnaround components, functional testing prototypes, or internal structural as-machined parts where structural and dimensional integrity is the only priority.

Surface Roughness Reference (As-Machined Standard)

Parameter Sub-Type / Grade Material Appearance & Specification
Surface Roughness (Ra) Ra 3.2 μm (126 μin) Metals & Plastics Non-Cosmetic. Cleaned, deburred, and chamfered directly after machining. Regular tool marks and minor surface scratches are visible.
Ra 1.6 μm (63 μin) Metals Non-Cosmetic. Achieving a smoother finish through optimized feed, speed, and strict tool-wear control. Fine tool marks are visible with a standard metallic shine.
Dimensional Tolerance Standard Fleet All Materials ±0.005 mm to ±0.01 mm based on high-rigidity machine capabilities.
Tool Marks As-Machined Baseline All Materials Visible & Predictable. Regular feed and cut textures are present; 100% in-house deburring ensures safe, burr-free edges ready for assembly.

Controlled Tool Paths & Predictable Surface Roughness

In an as-machined state, visible tool marks are inevitable—but inconsistent, chaotic textures shouldn’t be. Many machine shops use “as-machined” as an excuse for worn-out tools and poor finishing passes. As a high-standard contract manufacturer, we actively eliminate this variable. By enforcing strict tool-wear monitoring and optimized tool path programming, we guarantee that the native texture of your metal or plastic parts remains uniform, visually clean, and technically predictable from the first part to the last.

As Machined part for machining

100% In-House Deburring & Deep Cleaning

An as-machined designation means skipping secondary coatings—it should never mean receiving parts covered in cutting fluids, sharp burrs, or loose metal chips. We treat every raw component with industrial-grade respect. By keeping the post-machining cleaning and deburring process entirely under our roof, we ensure that while your as machined part retains its untouched dimensional profile, it is completely safe to handle and perfectly clean for its next destination.

Our Cleaning & Finishing Commitments:

Every single part undergoes strict quality checks to remove sharp edges and flashing. We guarantee a part that is safe for your assembly team to handle without altering your critical drawing dimensions.

We don't just wipe parts down. All raw components pass through our industrial ultrasonic tanks to completely dissolve and remove cutting oils, coolants, and trapped metal particles from deep holes or intricate slots.

For materials prone to oxidation, like carbon steel, we apply a temporary, clean rust-inhibitor immediately after drying. Parts are then securely packaged to ensure they arrive at your facility spotless, dry, and ready for use.

Zero Geometry Distortion

We are the ultimate defenders of your part’s dimensional integrity. With our As-Machined service, custom parts undergo absolutely no secondary heat treatment or chemical coating, meaning 100% of the material’s native mechanical properties and physical dimensions are preserved—completely eliminating warp and thermal deformation. Backed by our high-rigidity multi-axis fleet, we tightly control cutting heat to ensure the final deliverable matches your CAD model with micron-level consistency. No surprises, no deviations—just ready-to-assemble precision for your most rigorous functional tests.

CNC Quality Inspection

Our Quality Promise

For premium As-Machined components, dimensional precision is just as critical as cosmetic flawlessness. Operating under strict ISO 9001:2015 / AS9100D certified quality management systems, our quality assurance is built into every second of the machine’s runtime. Even without post-processing, every single batch undergoes a rigorous, multi-dimensional validation protocol:

We utilize advanced profilometers to verify that the surface roughness (Ra) strictly aligns with your microscopic specifications, ensuring a consistent matte or metallic luster.

Our climate-controlled quality labs leverage high-precision CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machines) and calibrated digital calipers to lock in micron-level tolerances.

Every component is manually audited under standardized lighting by trained inspectors to ensure complete eradication of micro-burrs and tool chatter.

Standardized micro-deburring and edge chamfering are applied upon request, delivering a safe-to-handle, assembly-ready component right out of the box.

Technical Considerations & Design Tips

Select highly machinable materials (e.g., Al 6061, Brass C360) and simplify geometries. Avoid excessive aspect ratios or deep, narrow channels to suppress harmonic vibration and prevent native surface defects.

Our standard finish delivers a controlled Ra 3.2 um, with precision options down to Ra 1.6 um. Since toolpaths leave predictable directional textures, consider their orientation for any sliding, sealing, or alignment faces.

While we guarantee 100% in-house deburring for safe handling, any critical edge-engineering requirements—such as specific chamfering or micro-radius limits—should be explicitly defined on your drawing.

With zero risk of secondary coating buildup or thermal distortion, our multi-axis fleet achieves your exact CAD dimensions straight from the machine. Ensure all critical, high-precision tolerances are clearly marked.

FAQ

Is an As-Machined finish suitable for high-precision or functional parts?

Absolutely. In fact, it is preferred. Because it skips secondary thermal or chemical treatments, an As-Machined finish eliminates any risk of geometric warping or coating buildup. This preserves 100% of the material's native mechanical properties and delivers the highest possible dimensional tolerance—making it ideal for internal structural components, jigs, fixtures, and functional prototypes.

What standard surface roughness grades can Xtproto achieve straight from the machine?

Our standard baseline as-machined roughness is Ra 3.2 μm (125 µin), which is perfect for most mechanical and structural applications. Through optimized feed rates, high-rigidity workholding, and precision finishing passes, we can routinely deliver smoother finishes down to Ra 1.6 μm (63 µin) or finer upon request.

Can As-Machined parts undergo secondary surface treatments later?

Yes. An as-machined part serves as the perfect clean substrate for post-processing. Depending on your aesthetic or functional needs, you can later apply bead blasting, mirror polishing, anodizing, plating, or painting. Note: Secondary abrasive or chemical finishes may slightly alter your final dimensional tolerances, so please consult our engineering team during the DFM stage.

Do you provide quality inspection reports for raw machined components?

Yes. Dimensional accuracy is our top priority. Operating under strict quality management systems, every batch undergoes metrology-grade audits and visual/tactile screening. We provide comprehensive inspection reports covering critical dimensions and tight tolerances before shipment.
