What is Tungsten?
Tungsten is a refractory metal celebrated for its extraordinary density, exceptional thermal resistance, and a melting point higher than any other metal. While these unique properties make it indispensable for radiation shielding, semiconductor components, and high-temperature industrial environments, they also make it notoriously difficult to machine. At room temperature, tungsten is highly brittle and can easily crack or delaminate under standard cutting forces, while its extreme hardness rapidly destroys conventional CNC tooling. Successfully manufacturing with tungsten requires specialized tool geometries, precise feed controls, and a deep understanding of the material’s unique stress tolerances.
Solving the Core Challenges of Tungsten Machining
Tungsten is one of the most difficult materials to machine due to its exceptional hardness, density, and brittleness. Without the right machining strategy, components are highly prone to cracking, rapid tool wear, dimensional instability, and thread failure. At XTPROTO
, we apply specialized CNC machining processes developed specifically for high-performance tungsten applications.
Tungsten Material Grades & Alloy Capabilities
At XTPROTO, we machine a wide range of tungsten materials engineered for different performance requirements, from ultra-high-density shielding components to electrically conductive EDM materials. Each tungsten grade presents unique machining behaviors, requiring customized tooling strategies, cutting parameters, and process control.
Pure tungsten offers an extremely high melting point, exceptional density, and excellent resistance to heat and corrosion. However, its high brittleness makes it one of the most difficult refractory metals to machine. It is commonly used in semiconductor equipment, vacuum environments, and ultra-high-temperature applications.
Tungsten heavy alloys combine tungsten with nickel-iron or nickel-copper binders to improve machinability and reduce brittleness while maintaining very high density. W-Ni-Fe alloys provide strong mechanical performance and magnetic properties, while W-Ni-Cu variants are non-magnetic and ideal for sensitive medical or electronic systems. These alloys are widely used for radiation shielding, aerospace counterweights, vibration damping, and defense applications.
Copper tungsten and silver tungsten composites combine the conductivity of copper or silver with the thermal stability and arc resistance of tungsten. These materials offer excellent electrical and thermal performance while remaining more stable during CNC machining and EDM processing. Typical applications include EDM electrodes, electrical contacts, and high-power thermal management systems.
Tungsten carbide is an ultra-hard material produced by combining tungsten carbide particles with a metallic binder, typically cobalt. Known for its extreme wear resistance and compressive strength, tungsten carbide cannot be machined using standard cutting methods and instead requires precision grinding or Wire EDM processing. It is commonly used for tooling, dies, cutting inserts, and high-wear industrial components.
